Complete Biography of Imam Al-Bukhari - Birth, Death and Journey of the Author of Sahih Al-Bukhari
Do you know that a scholar was able to memorize 600,000 hadiths at the age of 16? He is Imam Al-Bukhari, the author of the most authentic book after the Qur'an.
1. Birth and Lineage
His full name is Abu Abdullah Muhammad bin Ismail bin Ibrahim bin Al-Mughirah bin Bardizbah Al-Ju'fi Al-Bukhari.
He was born on Friday, 13 Shawwal 194 H / 21 July 810 AD in Bukhara, a famous city in Uzbekistan, Central Asia.
His father, Ismail bin Ibrahim, was a pious scholar and a student of Imam Malik. He died when Bukhari was still an infant, leaving him as an orphan raised by his pious mother.
2. The Miracle of His Blindness
As a child, Imam Bukhari suffered from blindness. His mother was a pious woman who never stopped praying and crying at night.
By Allah's permission, in her dream she met Prophet Ibrahim (AS) who said: "O woman, Allah has returned your son's sight because of your many prayers."
In the morning, his sight had returned completely. This was the beginning of his extraordinary journey.
3. Seeking Knowledge Since Childhood
He started memorizing hadith at age 10. At age 16, he had already memorized the books of Abdullah bin Mubarak and Waki'.
In the same year (210 H), he went to Mecca with his mother and brother for Hajj. After Hajj, his mother returned to Bukhara, but he stayed in Hijaz (Mecca and Medina) for 6 years to seek knowledge.
After that, his great journey began:
From Mecca to Medina, Baghdad, Basra, Kufa, Damascus, Egypt, Nishapur, Balkh, and many other cities. He met 1,080 scholars to collect hadiths.
4. The Test of 1,000 Scholars
This is the most famous story. When he arrived in Baghdad, scholars heard about his amazing memory.
100 scholars mixed up 100 hadiths - they changed the chains and texts. They tested him in front of thousands of people.
Imam Bukhari listened to all 100 false hadiths, then repeated them one by one while correcting the chain and saying: "You made a mistake, the correct chain is..."
He did not make a single mistake. All 1,000 scholars admitted his greatness.
5. The Masterpiece: Sahih Al-Bukhari
He compiled his book Al-Jami' Al-Sahih, known as Sahih Al-Bukhari, for 16 years.
From 600,000 hadiths he memorized, he selected only 7,275 hadiths (including repetitions, about 4,000 without repetition) that were truly authentic.
His habit was amazing: Every time he wanted to write a hadith, he would take a Ghusl (bath), pray 2 Rak'ahs, and perform Istikharah prayer.
This book is recognized by all Muslims as the most authentic book after the Holy Qur'an.
6. Death
He died on the night of Eid al-Fitr, 1 Shawwal 256 H / 31 August 870 AD, at the age of 62, in Khartank, a village near Samarkand.
He was buried there, and until today his grave is visited by many Muslims.
Lesson:
Imam Bukhari teaches us that to guard the Sunnah of the Prophet (PBUH), it takes honesty, intelligence, piety, and a long struggle.
May Allah have mercy on him and may we increase our love for Rasulullah and his hadiths.
